Notes on the house:

  • The house is custom designed and was built in 1993 by William Clark Construction. It is a Cape Cod with three dormers, 3600 square feet on 3 floors.
  • Full basement: Reinforced concrete. Half of the basement is finished as a family room, full bath, office, kitchenette, and exercise room. The other half is utility and workshop space.
  • First floor: Formal entrance hall with elegant staircase, family room with large fireplace, formal dining room, library with custom oak bookcases. Kitchen with attached breakfast area has custom cherry cabinetry. First floor master suite with twin walk-in closets and large master bath.
  • Second floor: Three bedrooms/two baths, one ensuite. There is a rear staircase to allow quick family access between floors.
  • Vaulted master bath with double sinks, oversize cast iron tub, walk-in shower, heated floor
  • First floor and upstairs hallways are red oak. All 4 1/2 baths are ceramic tile.
  • Exterior is brick and Hardie plank siding. The siding and roof were replaced in 2022.
  • Floor joists are 2×12 Douglas fir. Roof sheathing is 5/8 fir ply. Red oak floors with Mahogany and Walnut threshhold trim. When we built this house, the cost of lumber was only 17% of the cost of the project. Only the best materials were used.
  • There are four fully operational chimney flues (with 12″ flue liners) in two large chimneys. Based on traditional designs, they all draw beautifully without smoking. Flue 1: The large family room fireplace. Flue 2: Master bedroom traditional fireplace with colonial-styled paneled wall, Flue 3: Basement family room woodstove. Flue 4: Woodstove in unfinished part of basement, intended for backup heat.
  • There is a large (>800sf) deck behind the house, Includes a dining area with Wisteria shaded pergola, cooking area, porch swing looking towards the Peaks of Otter.
Family room with 12′ ceiling. Master bath 10′ ceiling. All other ceilings 9′
Two fireplaces on this level, a large wonderful fireplace in the family room and a traditional fireplace is the master bedroom.
All red oak floors.
Formal entry hall with 2-storey ceiling and elegant staircase.
Master bath with heated floor and separate tub/shower.
Kitchen with custom built cherry cabinets.
Three bedrooms on second floor. Two staircases, a formal one in front and a ‘main family use’ one in the rear. One bedroom has ensuite bath, the other two bedrooms share a hall bath.

Notes on the property:

The house sits on 42 acres. Two-thirds is wooded, with mature hardwoods. The rest is lawn, vineyard, and pasture.

The house is sited in a clearing on the top of a wooded foothill, with panoramic views. Pastures and vineyard are located in the valley at the base of the hill.

There are several reliable springs on the property, forming a brook that flows into Ivy Creek. There is a brilliant pond site that I never got around to developing.

The closest neighbor is 0.2 miles away.

Outbuildings: Greenhouse and garden shed beside the formal gardens. Equipment shed for lawn maintenance items, large enough for two small farm tractors. Combination storage and equipment shed located beside the vineyard.

This is what greets visitors at the start of the driveway
Formal gardens, greenhouse, garden shed, and fenced kitchen garden. There is a cistern with a hand pump for rainwater. The back of the kitchen garden has scuppernong grapes that came from my grandfather’s house. There are blueberry bushes behind the greenhouse.
The foothill where the house is located is covered with tens of thousands of wild raspberry vines. Blackberry also, but the raspberries dominate. The local old folks call them ‘wineberries’. Summertime means pound cake with whipped cream and freshly picked berries.
Yes, there really is a short par 3 golf hole
It is hard to describe the site. The house it at the top of a foothill (1200′ elevation) with panoramic views…. CIty of Lynchburg in front, Peaks of Otter in back, the lights of Bedford to the west. There is unbroken forest all the way to the Blue RIdge Parkway.
